OUR name came off the back of our founder’s mental health struggles. WHERE USING COFFEE TO SLOW DOWN WAS A LARGE PART OF GETTING BETTER. slow is more than a roasting company. it wants to use SPECIALITY coffee to encourage people to be more present. to slow down and enjoy being where their feet are.
WHEre it all began
Started in the garage of Alex and Sam’s flat Slow was born in 2022 out of a passion for coffee they both had and a desire to be able to roast coffee the way they wanted to enjoy it. Because all good things start in a garage, right?
From there Slow has continued to grow, opening up its online store, getting retail bags in stores, and most recently opening its own pop-up showcasing its coffee to the Waikato community and showing people what it means to drink Slow Coffee.
Our approach to coffee
We work hard to ensure we are roasting our green coffee to best express the hard work the farmers at the origin have done.
Coffee roasting is as much an art and it is a science for us. That’s what we love about it. We anaylse but we also use feel. Roasting is a live process and things can change along the way. We have to always be ready to adapt and make the most of each and every roast.
We are always trying to add new coffees to our offerings. As we grow, our offering will grow with us and our customers. We are constantly learning and researching ways to improve and make better coffee.
Meet the Team
SAM DAKIN
Often found perfecting his latte art at 6am in the kitchen before going to the gym, Sam, (known as ‘Dakin’) has spent his entire life chasing the dream of becoming an Olympic and World Champion one day in track cycling. After making part of the dream come true in the past few years by going to the 2021 Olympics and winning a Commonwealth Games Bronze medal he is working hard to make the 2024 Olympic team. Throughout this, he has found a passion for coffee (naturally as coffee stops are part and parcel of riding your bike) and entrepreneurship having also founded a recruitment company called Podium. He loves a silky flat white, lifting big weights in the gym all whilst listening to Fred Again… and the occasional Beyonce.
Dakin is the man behind the scenes, roasting, building websites, emailing customers , , running the socials and everything else that comes with being 1 of 2 in a growing company
Alex king
Often found at a lake flying 50-odd metres through the air on his water skis. Alex is one of NZ’s best water skiers. Having skied all of his life and doing study in the States he has traveled the world and seen lots of different coffee cultures. He loves a filter coffee. V60, particularly a washed Kenyan.
He is the pretty man behind the counter at the shop. Slinging silky brews and great yarns ensures the customers are happy. He is a big believer in using coffee to slow down. To take a moment and is a living and breathing man to speak to our brand!
Doesn’t mind a good DnB gig, a hazy IPA and a day at the lake, with his mates, competing and doing the thing he has known all his life, skiing!
