AN INTRODUCTION TO FILTER COFFEE

For a lot of coffee drinkers the term ‘filter coffee’ might seem like a bit of a mystery. You may have seen it on the menu in cafes and on roasters’ websites but have never quite understood why everyone is excited about what they assume is "American Diner Drip coffee". Alex, our Co-Founder has been successful over the past few weeks in converting a few Americano drinkers into filter coffee fanatics now so we thought we better keep spreading the word about the good stuff.

In essence, the main difference between filter coffee and more traditional espresso-based beverages is that it doesn’t use a pump to apply pressure to the grounds and more often than not is a very manual method of brewing coffee.

Espresso, traditionally is made using 9 bars of pressure with fine coffee grounds. Filter coffee uses nearly no pressure depending on the brew method. Using coarsely ground coffee you are able to simply pour water over the grounds which are sitting in a paper filter. The water then drips through the filter creating a lovely, delicate, and flavoursome cup of coffee.

You get a lot more distinct flavour notes because of the gentleness of the brew method and with also the roasters, including us, will roast the coffee lighter to ensure the beans are being expressed at their best.

So, if you like black coffee and want to try something different. You can either visit us down at the pop-up on Alpha St and Alex will serve you up the good stuff or click here to view our filter coffee range online.

At the Pop Up we use a Breville precision batch brewing machine to make our filter coffee. When we have more time at Slow though we like to use either a Hario V60 or an Aeropress
